We are a team of local teens (Plainfield, Lebanon, surrounding areas) and adults paddling to commemorate the life of our friend Jasmine Rogers, who died in October 2011, and to support local resources for the prevention of suicide.
Last year, our team included six teenagers and four adults along with a number of volunteers, and we were one of the biggest fundraisers for Paddle Power 2012. This time around, we aim to exceed our past record by raising at least $5000 and getting 12 boats for our team on the water (pirates beware!). We plan to recruit even more youth, teen and young adult participants, as well as more volunteer, giving each a chance to experience the joy of helping while raising awareness Please support our team and this very worthy cause! |

We are a group of Central Vermont residents who have been touched in some way, distant or near, by suicide. In our love of kayaking, spending time together, and enjoying life we are looking forward to spending a weekend together for a great cause. "So this weekend (August 21-22, 2010) was the first weekend that Marques and I volunteered, with a group of friends, at an annual event held by West Central Behavioral Health. The event was titled PaddlePower, and its efforts help to raise money for suicide prevention. Last summer when Marques' mom lost her battle with Depression, we were invited by a close friend (Thanks Garrett!!) to participate in this event as volunteers, as his family has been involved 8+ years now. As volunteers our role as boat valets was an absolutely rewarding one. We were there as supports for those who needed or wanted it. The 150 paddlers participating, some family members of suicide victims, some recovering themselves from their own battle with suicide, were so uplifting, grateful and gracious. I was amazed at the number of people in their 60s and 70's paddling for loved ones. It was an honor to help these people carry their boats in and out of the water, up and down hills all weekend. I soon realized why Garrett said they "sleep" for fun on Saturday night, as helping 150 boats in and out of the water 4 times over the course of the first day proved exhausting. I had the best nights sleep though. Especially with our B&N symphony coming from all tents on the site. Although I think Mel, with her head wound, slept the best.........;-). Actually, it was a pretty disastrously comical weekend for us volunteers as I think NO one made it out without some sort of wound or major bruise. I know I have 3!! On the last day when it was cold and rainy and people were reluctant to go on. We supported and coaxed them, commenting on how representative the final day was, as suicide is about fighting those dark days and choosing to go on despite the obstacles you may face. The day was definitely dreary but not intimidating enough to end the race. The closing ceremonies were great, and offered proof that there is a direct connection between the sound of bagpipes (especially on Amazing Grace) and my tear ducts...:*). I was a blubbering idiot, but mostly because I could not help but think of Deb, Marques' mother, the entire weekend! Still brings a tear to my eye! Thank you so much to the Hawley family for including us in this wonderfully extraordinary event!" ~ Gabby & Marques Pozzani |
